C-Tier
Definition: A C-Tier is a local sanctioned disc golf tournament, usually the most accessible entry point into PDGA tournament play. C-Tiers are official tournament events, but they involve fewer administrative requirements, smaller fields, shorter schedules, and lower payout or player-pack expectations than B-Tier, A-Tier, Elite Series, or Major events. A C-Tier may still be competitive and well-run, but it is primarily designed to support local tournament play and provide players with a practical introduction to sanctioned competition.
Why It Matters: C-Tiers make sanctioned disc golf accessible to a broad range of players. They give new competitors a way to experience tournament rules, divisions, scoring, player meetings, cards, ratings, and competitive pressure. For tournament directors and local clubs, C-Tiers build participation, develop tournament experience, and support regular competitive play.
Term Observations:
- C-Tier describes the level of the tournament, not the division of the player. A C-Tier may include amateur divisions such as MA4, MA3, MA2, MA1, FA divisions, and professional divisions depending on the event.
- C-Tiers are usually local events and are often less demanding in scope, scheduling, staffing, payout structure, and course-preparation requirements than B-Tiers or A-Tiers.
- A C-Tier is often the best first sanctioned tournament for a new player because the event is usually more approachable, less expensive, and less intimidating than higher-tier competition.
- Although C-Tiers are the most accessible tournament tier, they still involve organized tournament play, PDGA rules, official divisions, scorekeeping, and competitive expectations.
- Strong players frequently compete in C-Tiers, so a C-Tier should not be dismissed as casual or unimportant. The tier describes the event structure, not necessarily the skill level of every player in the field.
